The first bit of casting news for the big-screen adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s “Beautiful Creatures” has finally been conjured, and it is spellbinding indeed: Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis has signed on to play Amma, according to a statement from Alcon Entertainment.

For the uninitiated, the Southern gothic series follows teen Ethan Wate, whose nightmares have been haunted for months by an unknown beauty. When he finally comes face to face with his dream girl (the raven-haired Lena Duchannes), he discovers they have an undeniable connection that cannot be ignored… And that she’s a witch (known in this mythology as a “caster”).

Viola’s character, Amma, is a no-nonsense “seer” who looks after Ethan and his father after Ethan’s mother’s death. And she’s hiding a few secrets of her own. If you ask us, securing an Oscar nominee early in the casting process certainly bodes well for the many roles left to fill, including Ethan, Lena and her powerful uncle Macon Ravenwood. Production will begin in New Orleans in April.

This week, MTV’s newest scripted show, “I Just Want My Pants Back,” kicks off, following the dating lives of a group of 20-somethings in New York City. It’s kind of like a darker, raunchier “Friends” (with a touch of “Sex and the City” thrown in for good measure). And, who doesn’t love that? So, in honor of the show’s premiere this Thursday we are showing some love to the three guys on the series and naming them our Hump Day Hotties. (Also, they are sharing their worst date memories! Then it’s two people who like each other going out, but a date, oy. That’s rough. I think dates are rough in general.”

Worst Date: “I’m trying to search the records. The worst date I ever had was my fault. I was trying to seem smart so I took this girl to ‘Boys Don’t Cry.’ And then I was like, ‘What, no kiss at the end?’ She was like, ‘I hate you.’ That was the worst date I ever had. And I, hand to God, did that. I was like, she’ll think I’m deep. Oh god! Panic mode! It’s my last 20 bucks.”
